Excerpt
Acronis allows its partners to offer free trials to anyone who wishes to evaluate the Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud products and can convert these customers to paid resellers at the end of the free period. Our platform automates the management of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product trials by allowing your customers to evaluate any Cyber Protect Cloud product.

The business rules applied for the trials are the following:

  1. For Acronis, the trial is on account level, not per service/contract, and a trial account in Acronis can try any service/contract. For complying with this, when an MSP requests a trial for an end-customer, we provision this end-customer to Acronis as a trial account

  2. An MSP cannot purchase an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product when the end-customer has an active trial subscription. If they tries it, they will get the error message "Acronis does not allow owning Services under trial along with Services in production. Please either Upgrade to Paid or Cancel your current trial subscription".

  3. In order to avoid the creation of an extra paid subscription, when another active one is already present, our systems do not allow the MSP to upgrade an expired or inactive trial subscription to a paid one.

  4. A customer tenant in Acronis remains in the trial mode for one full month (that means for a billing cycle) and is automatically switched by Acronis platform to production only on the 1st of each month, which may not be exactly in 30 days.

  5. Activation of a Trial subscription in BSS works only when the Start Date is equal to the Activation Date in order for the End Date to be correctly calculated and in line with the Acronis Trial End Date.

Enabling Trial for Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Products

When Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud products are created via the "Get Services Definition", a 1-Month trial is suggested to be set on all of them, from the MSP. However, this is not compulsory.

The trial option for a specific Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product can be enabled by activating the "Trial Period" option and setting a 1-Month trial period from the details page of any of the Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud products.

Enabling Trial Period - New VS Existing Customers

It is expected that for all Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud newcomers, once the Get Services Definition process is run from the preferred instance of the Acronis service manager in BSS Setup, the trial option on all available products to be enabled automatically. However, for the existing customers, the trials must be enabled manually by editing all the available Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud products one by one.

Configuration of Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Trial Products

BSS users can update the trial period as well as disable or enable trials for all products found either inside or outside a product group.

Suggested Trial Period and Quantity

We suggest setting the trial period to 1 Month since this is the period that Acronis allows for trials. Also, the quantity must always be set to one (1).

Trial Fixed Price with Overage PPU Products

Trial Fixed Price with Overage PPU products with Fixed Price with Overage can be available by just enabling the trial option of a given PPU product, such as an Acronis product.

  • Trial Subscription for a Fixed Price with Overage PPU Products: The same rules exist for the Fixed Price with Overage trial products and subscriptions as for the Acronis trial products analyzed

Trial Products

Acronis MSPs
  • this page.

  • Monthly Fixed Price with Overage in PPU trial subscriptions: Since no invoices are generated for the trial subscriptions, there is no need for customers to prepay the monthly Fixed Price on trial subscriptions. So, the monthly Fixed Price is not invoiced when a trial subscription is created; either the Hybrid PPU product’s payment option is upfront or not, and therefore the monthly Fixed Price will not be displayed in the subscription view in BSS and in Storefront.

In Storefront, no terms of use are required when an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product trial subscription is created. The MSP will have to accept those, on behalf of his end customers, only during the upgrade from the trial to the paid subscription.

From BSS, you are able to provide a trial to your customers by creating a trial subscription, once you click on the Request for Trial button, located under the Shortcuts' menu of the product's overview page.

Trial Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Products in a Product Group

Since Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud products are normally included in a product group, the MSP can set one or more products as the trial product(s) of the group via BSS. The distributor might initially set a default option (product) for trials to be displayed in the Storefront. However, customers are able to get any trial product they want.

Ordering Rules

  1. It is not allowed for a customer who had in the past an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product trial to request a new one. If he tries it, he will get the error message "This account owned an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product. Purchasing more trials for the same account is not allowed".
  2. A customer that already owns a paid Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud product subscription cannot request a trial. If he tries it, he will get the error message "Acronis does not allow owning Services under production along with Services in trial. This account already owns an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud production subscription. Purchasing trials for that account is not allowed".

Trial Subscription Creation Flow

As previously analyzed, an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Trial subscription is created via the Storefront Checkout or via BSS by creating a trial subscription. When a trial subscription is provisioned, the following actions take place:

  1. The customer's Acronis account is switched to “trial” mode.

  2. Then, the Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Trial subscription synchronization takes place.

Upgrading Trial Subscriptions to Paid

Automatic "Trial to Paid" Change from Acronis

After the end of the trial in 1 month, Acronis automatically changes any trial subscription to a paid one, meaning that the Acronis tenant account of the trial subscription is also changed from trial to production automatically.
However, since this change is done outside our systems, we do not get informed about these automatic changes and therefore manual changes are required from the MSPs for aligning our system to that of Acronis.
MSPs, the day after the end of the trial, need to either upgrade the trial to a paid one or cancel it

A trial subscription can be upgraded to paid via both the Storefront and the BSS platform.

In the Storefront, MSPs have to agree with the terms of use on checkout.

When the trial subscription is upgraded to paid, it is upgraded to "production" mode along with the Acronis tenant Account of the customer.

Upgrading an Active Trial Subscription to Paid

When a subscription is upgraded to paid, during the paid subscription provisioning, the Acronis account tenant mode is switched from "trial" to "production".

Upgrading an Inactive Trial Subscription to Paid

When an inactive trial subscription is upgraded to paid, during the paid subscription provisioning, the Acronis account tenant is reinstated as "enabled," and the tenant mode is switched from "trial" to "production".

Upgrade to Paid a Fixed Price with Overage PPU Trial Subscription

The “upgrade to paid” process works exactly the same as for Acronis PPU trial subscriptions. The only difference regarding the Fixed Price with Overage PPU product is that an order item displaying the fixed price will appear inside the invoice during the invoicing.

Information Concerning the Effects of Acronis Account Tenant Mode-Switching

In Acronis, if you switch the mode from trial to production in the middle of a month, the entire month will be included in the monthly service usage report. For this reason, we recommend that you switch the mode on the third day of a month.

However, since BSS trial duration is the period that is set on the product and does not follow prorata restrictions, the trial subscriptions will almost never end on a different date than the end of the month.

Canceling a Trial Subscription

If an MSP cancels the trial subscription of one of his end customers, then this trial subscription is not upgradable to a paid one anymore, so the end customer has to request a new purchase from the MSP.
When an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Trial subscription is canceled, the Acronis tenant is updated to disabled.

All three cancellation execution types (Immediate, Specific Data, End of Billing Period) are available when canceling a trial subscription.

Expiration of a Trial Subscription

If an end customer's active trial subscription expires, the end customer can either request from their MSP to upgrade it to a paid one or request a new purchase of a paid subscription.
If an end customer's inactive trial subscription expires, a new purchase of a paid subscription must be requested from the MSP.
When an Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud Trial subscription is expired, the Acronis tenant account is updated to disabled.
